A survey for IronmongeryDirect found that 85% of tradespeople were only asked to fit security products after a break-in.

The survey results have been published by the online ironmongery supplier in support of National Home Security Month, which runs throughout October and aims to raise awareness around the importance of home security.

Despite the increased availability of such products, the survey, which was completed by 2,000 tradespeople, also revealed that only 7% are regularly asked about fitting smart security products, with 57% never asked at all.

This is backed up by research by the National Home Security Month campaign which shows that 28% of UK adults take no security precautions at home.

When the Office of National Statistics (ONS) released its latest crime statistics earlier this year, it revealed that 1 in every 65 homes in England and Wales had been burgled in the previous 12-month period.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, Managing Director at IronmongeryDirect, said: “Having a good level of home security is vital and it’s important that tradespeople advise their customers on the options available to them in order to prevent potential break-ins.

There are a wide range of products available to help keep a building safe and secure – from a basic lock to sophisticated alarm systems. There is also an increasing number of smart technology products available, providing remote monitoring to secure a property.”
