A commemorative access cover dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community has been installed at United Utilities' headquarters.

This project is a partnership between Wrekin Products and United Utilities, inspired by Wrekin’s similar collaboration with Thames Water.

Designed to celebrate both organisations’ support for the LGBTQ+ community, the bespoke cover has been installed at United Utilities’ headquarters in Warrington, Cheshire. This installation follows Wrekin’s installation of the UK’s first LGBTQ+ commemorative manhole cover in Reading in 2021.

To bring the cover to life, Wrekin used an intricate milling and colouring process, ensuring that the iconic rainbow colours—including black and brown to represent LGBTQ+ people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and white, pink and blue for Trans people—are vividly displayed on the cover’s exterior.

The design was machined with precision using a CNC machine operating at 26,000rpm, etching fine details into the surface. The colours were then cast using pigmented epoxy resin, and then polished by hand to achieve the final finish.

Simon Turner, Commercial Director at Wrekin Products, said: “We are proud to collaborate with United Utilities on this meaningful initiative. These bespoke access covers make a bold statement of inclusion and serve as a lasting tribute to the LGBTQ+ community. At Wrekin, we believe that infrastructure should reflect the diversity of the communities it serves, and we’re thrilled to see this cover take pride of place.”

The installation site at United Utilities’ headquarters in Warrington was selected to maximise visibility, ensuring that employees, visitors, and passers-by can appreciate the message of inclusivity that the cover represents.

Sammy Nelson, Programme Delivery Manager at United Utilities, added: “At United Utilities, we are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued. This commemorative manhole cover is a visible demonstration of our support for the LGBTQ+ community, and aligns with our wider efforts to celebrate diversity. We’re delighted to partner with Wrekin Products on this unique initiative and hope it inspires conversations around equality and representation.”

This is the latest in a series of bespoke access cover designs by Wrekin, following projects including the Abbey Road commemorative cover celebrating The Beatles’ iconic album, and a Whitechapel Road cover marking the location of London’s infamous ‘fatberg.’
