NORTH EAST: Employees at GPH Builders Merchants are proving that those in their golden years are fit and healthy to report for work.
GPH, which has branches in Westhill and Inverurie, currently has three team members at the firm’s Westhill branch who are in their seventies.
Yardsman David Yackimini, 74, has been with the company for nine years, and stock assistant Andy Smith and cashier Richard Grant, both 70, have worked there for eight and six years respectively.
“Working for GPH allows me to give something back to the community. I enjoy meeting new people and my role is very hands on and involves a lot of lifting and handling of materials, which keeps me fit and active,” said Mr Yackimini.
Sales & marketing director of GPH, Nikki Mortimer said: “Andy, David and Richard are all a valuable asset to the team. They are very knowledgeable in their fields of work and have a wealth of experience.”
Prior to joining the team, Mr Smith worked in security for 30 years in various managerial roles which let him work all over the UK. Mr Grant had a career in accountancy spanning more than 20 years, working mainly in the oil and gas industry.
“Working here now keeps my mind busy and gets me out of the house and allows me to continue using the skills I have acquired over the years,” said Mr Smith.
A report issued by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) last year claimed there are more than 800,000 workers over the age of 65 in the UK. Another report found that one in five UK employees did not expect to retire until they are over 70.
GPH, which has been operating in the North-East for 30 years, boasts a loyal team with little staff turnover.
“We believe in equal opportunities and if someone is physically able to work then it should be their choice to continue working,” Ms Mortimer added.
