New Milton Sand and Ballast (NMSB) is celebrating International Women's Day (8 March) by highlighting the career of Karen Dickie, its Builders' Merchant Manager.

Dickie's journey in the industry, spanning over 30 years, offers a compelling look at the evolving role of women in the traditionally male-dominated construction supply industry. Starting in 1984, Dickie has witnessed significant changes, overcoming challenges such as sexism, and proving her competence through dedication and hard work. She has been with NMSB for nearly 10 years.

"I fell into it by accident," she recalled, "and I’m still here 30 years later, genuinely because I love what I do." Her passion for customer service and continuous learning has been a driving force throughout her career.

Dickie's story exemplifies the resilience of women in the construction sector. "When I first came into the industry, one of the biggest challenges was sexism," she noted. "But it was down to proving yourself and showing you’re capable."

Reflecting on the industry's transformation, she observed: "The business is constantly changing. I always say every day’s a school day."

As one of the largest employers in New Milton, NMSB is committed to fostering an inclusive environment. With women comprising over 17% of their workforce (2% higher than the industry standard), NMSB has implemented flexible working arrangements, championed women in leadership, improved welfare facilities, introduced leadership training, and is amplifying the visibility of women in the industry.

"NMSB is a firm believer in investing in local talent," stated Gemma Lund, HR Director. "The recent addition of three female trainees demonstrates our commitment to diversifying the industry and providing opportunities for fulfilling careers."

NMSB proudly celebrates the contributions of women like Karen, whose dedication and leadership inspire the entire community. The company remains dedicated to building a more equitable and inclusive future for the construction industry in the New Forest.
