The Pallet LOOP – the circular economy pallet reuse scheme for the UK construction sector – is pleased to announce that its distinctive green pallets are now being used to distribute approximately 90% of products manufactured by British Gypsum.

The news follows the introduction of additional pallet specifications, covering more of British Gypsum’s plasterboard range, and comes just eight months after the first LOOP pallets entered the building materials supply chain carrying British Gypsum’s bagged plaster products.

Since May last year, The Pallet LOOP (part of BSW Group) has issued more than 700,000 of its bright green pallets – which are designed to be collected from construction projects, building sites and merchants yards nationwide, and used again and again.

Up and down the country, an increasing number of builders merchants, housebuilding companies and principal contractors are now using The Pallet LOOP service – reaping the associated financial, waste and carbon savings.

In November and December, pallet recovery rates hit 30% – three times the typical industry average pallet return rate, which has historically hovered around the 10% mark. The Pallet LOOP has also set up more than 7000 collection points on its system – enabling companies nationwide to return pallets and access its PayBack scheme, which offers a financial incentive of up to £4 for every green LOOP pallet returned for reuse.

Steve Ottaway, Head of Operations at The Pallet LOOP, said: “From a standing start, we are delighted with what we have achieved with our pallet collection rates. As well as demonstrating the effectiveness of a closed loop pallet collection system, our return rates underscore the willingness of all parts of the construction industry to embrace a different way of working. We are grateful to those companies already using the service and look forward to growing our collections figures this year as more building material manufacturers choose to adopt The Pallet LOOP.”

Companies that want to return LOOP pallets for reuse, need to register for a collections account by emailing: setmeup@thepalletloop.com or calling 0800 024 6130. The Pallet LOOP is a transformational circular economy, pallet reuse scheme that is on a mission to eliminate avoidable pallet waste in the construction sector in the UK and Ireland. Founded by some of the biggest names in the pallet industry, The Pallet LOOP provides construction companies with a greener, leaner, safer and smarter way of transporting building materials. Shifting the sector away from the current pallet practice of 'deliver, distribute and discard' to the principles of 'recover, repair, reuse', The Pallet LOOP incentivises pallet returns via a cost-effective, easy-to-administer system that pays up to £4 back for every green pallet put back in the LOOP by registered return partners. Offering a fast, efficient service for the collection of its distinctive green LOOP pallets, plus traditional white pallets, The Pallet LOOP is committed to helping the construction industry in the UK and Ireland cut its consumption of timber for pallet production, improve its sustainability credentials, and increase its contribution to the nation's zero waste and zero carbon ambitions. The Pallet LOOP is part of the UK's largest forestry and timber business, BSW Group, and a member of Binderholz - Europe's leading timber processing operation.
