Ridgeons’ timber division has teamed up with SCA Timber Supply to provide three saplings to Kennett Primary School in Newmarket.

Pupils representing the school's council joined Ridgeons Forest Products’ sales and marketing manager Stephan Wait and SCA Timber Supply’s area manager Antony Considine in planting the saplings at a carefully chosen spot within the school grounds.

As well as the planting, the whole school enjoyed a timber-themed assembly, during which Mr Considine talked to the pupils about the Forest Stewardship Council's certification. He explained what it stands for, how it works, and the importance of ensuring that timber is from a sustainable source.

Headteacher Lisa Gregory said: "When we were approached about the kind tree donation and the offer of a timber-themed assembly, we jumped at the opportunity to further our links with our Ridgeons neighbours. We are a small school, so forging relationships within our local community – while helping to grow our pupils' understanding of the environment in which they live – is very important.

"We are always looking for new and exciting ways to develop our pupils' sense of ownership, and progress their awareness of sustainability. As the saplings prosper, the pupils will be able to watch them grow, while gaining a better understanding of the significance that sustainability plays in our future.

"The children are very interested in developing their gardening knowledge, so we are sure that this latest horticultural addition to our school will help point us in the right direction."

Mr Wait added: "Wherever possible we aim to support the communities in which we operate. We are very fortunate to enjoy strong links with Kennett Primary School, and being able to plant these saplings and know that they will be there for future pupils to enjoy is very fulfilling."
