LEICESTER: Building materials giant Lafarge is backing one of the county’s biggest events for young footballers.

The company, which has its headquarters in Syston and boasts Britain’s biggest granite quarry at Mountsorrel, has donated £1500 to fund trophies for the Quornament, taking place on June 11 and 12.

Now in its 14th year the two-day event is held at Rawlins Community College, Quorn, and features matches between dozens of junior soccer sides.

Ages range from under-sevens to under-14s with the older children playing in a competitive seven-a-side format. Last year the tournament attracted 1000 players and more than 2000 spectators.

Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK has been the Quornament’s main sponsors for 13 years, giving more than £8000 in total over that time.

Stuart Broughton, secretary of Quorn Juniors, who organise the games said: “We had a fantastic two days last year and we’re looking forward to another super event this time round.

“Lafarge has been brilliant in backing the Quornament and enabling us to help thousands of boys and girls enjoy the great game of football over the last 13 years.”

Angus Shedden, quarry manager at Mountsorrel, close to Quorn, said: “As a local company we are committed to working with and building relationships within the community in which we operate.

“We are delighted to once more be able to support this tournament which brings so much happiness to so many youngsters from Quorn and beyond.

“It is always a pleasure to support young people taking part in sport within our community. We hope the Quornament will bring a smile to the faces of all the boys and girls taking part and of course their families and friends too.”
