WALES: The largest independent builders' merchant in South West Wales has opened a new branch in Neath.
The acquisition of the one-acre site by LBS Builders' Merchants brings the company's number of outlets to 12. "It represents another major investment for LBS, which opened branches in Cardigan in 2008, Swansea in 2007 and Pembroke Dock in 2006," said managing director, Mark Davies.
Since LBS acquired the Neath Abbey Road site from Casey's, the existing stock levels at the site have been greatly increased and the company is selling DIY materials, timber and kitchens and bathrooms as well all other general building materials.
LBS has retained Casey's staff and is also creating 10 new jobs at the site – all of which will be filled by people from the Neath area – Mr Davies pointed out.
As well as improvements to the yard and building, the company is investing in updating IT systems.
"LBS has a strong history of delivering building products in and around Neath, so the addition of the branch within the town will allow new and existing customers to collect products and enjoy an improved delivery service.
"We are delighted to continue with the company's long-term expansion plans after 2009's difficult trading conditions.
"The opportunity to open a branch in Neath was one we felt we couldn't refuse, and we look forward to employing more local people to help us make this branch a real success as LBS keeps growing at an exciting, yet controlled, rate."
Councillor Ali Thomas, leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, said: "I welcome this new investment in the area and it's great to see an indigenous company expanding and creating jobs locally. The construction industry has been hit hard by the recession and it's good to see signs of confidence in the local economy."
