The Company 

Our client is a leading independent UK distributor of products for a range of construction applications including fire protection, insulation, roofing, suspended ceilings, partitions and dry lining.  

The Role 

Reporting to the Regional Director, to manage the branch operations to achieve agreed targets for sales volume, profitability, and overhead control, within the framework of national and local trading policies, whilst adhering to company policy and Health & Safety standards. 

The ability to build and maintain strong relationships externally with customers and suppliers and internally with the company’s Directors, field sales teams, branch and head office staff are all imperative for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Manage of daily activities of branch sales personnel; to achieve volume and profitability targets within the framework of nationally and locally agreed plans. 

  • Work with senior Directors to set local sales and contribution strategy.

  • Monitor daily sales and contribution performance at branch, acting where necessary to achieve targets and maximise contribution.  

  • Set local strategy for target products in co-operation with relevant suppliers.  

  • Accountable for all aspects of customer service, achieving and exceeding customer service levels.   

  • Manage sales development locally in target market sectors and through utilisation of project-tracking, access to national accounts, promotion of technical services, and best use of all commercial support offered centrally to branch.  

  • Proactively identify where changes and improvements can be made to branch operations– in conjunction senior colleagues.

  • Responsibility for management of branch sales and operations teams, in conjunction with branch management team where appropriate. 

  • Lead by example, set clear direction and give regular feedback, providing motivation to ensure productivity.  

  • Create an environment which encourages proactive teamwork and in which employees have a strong sense of ownership and accountability. 

  • Coach team on product knowledge, company processes & procedures and personal development. 

  • Recruit, identify and work with talent for the future. 

  • Ensure the maximisation of sales, contribution and cost controls.

  • Develop and execute of business plans for the branch including long and short term forecasting and resource planning. 

  • Carry out all branch functions within the bounds of monthly and annual cost budgets, monitoring costs of consumables and seeking more cost effective alternatives.

  • Minimise working capital employed by controlling credit days, stock valuation, slow moving stock valuation and assisting in cash collection.

  • Develop and maintain sound commercial relationships with suppliers, ensuring all purchasing at branch is conducted to best commercial advantage.

  • Ensure purchasing trends correspond with budget targets for major suppliers and national purchasing strategies, monitoring performance and amending buying patterns as necessary.  

  • Utilise supplier facilities to promote new products, to develop new markets, and to ensure that branch personnel maintain adequate standards of product knowledge. 

  • Ensure branch stock profiles are maintained to achieve targets for sales volume and profitability, customer service levels, purchasing strategies and product mix.

  • Utilise central stock holding and distribution to assist branch control of stock and to take maximum advantage of bulk buying.

  • Supervise periodic stock takes. 

  • Support compliance with company procedures on operational areas such as employee performance and attendance, branch administration, security, facilities, monitoring and reporting on local market and branch performance etc.

  • Any other duty reasonably requested by senior management.  


Essential Skills and Behaviors 

  • Sales, customer service and people management experience, numerate, literate, IT knowledge (MS office), sales experience, product knowledge.

  • Customer focused, good communication and negotiation, results driven, team player, detail conscious, personable, analytical, business and commercially focused.
