Hospice a step closer to securing dementia garden

Published:  29 November, 2018

A Yorkshire hospice’s hopes of creating a new dementia garden have moved a step closer to reality after a merchant donated building materials.

Selco Builders Warehouse recently marked ten years of its Yorkshire branches by donating hundreds of pounds worth of building materials to the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford, which provides care and support to people suffering from terminal illness and their families.

Selco has had branches on Tong Street in Bradford and Elland Road in Leeds since 2008. Additional branches have also opened in York and Leeds Roundhay over the last 18 months.

The building materials will be used to help create a dementia garden that gives patients access to outdoor space, proven to be beneficial to people with the illness.

Aanika Dhillon, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie Bradford, said: “We would like to congratulate Selco for reaching ten years in Yorkshire and offer huge thanks for the generous donation.

“Having access to an enjoyable outdoor space can create numerous benefits to people suffering from dementia so we are delighted this project is moving ever closer to being completed.

Selco Bradford Branch Manager Kevin O’Rourke added: “Marie Curie Bradford does outstanding work and there are members of our team who also volunteer there, so it was an obvious fit when we were looking for a charity to support to mark our Yorkshire landmark.

“Providing support in the local communities is a major part of the Selco ethos, and this dementia garden will have a real impact on people who are going through a very difficult time in their lives.”
