Experts are urging merchants to join in with an initiative to raise awareness of the importance of only allowing a qualified person to work on a gas installation.
Safety concerns have recently prompted The Heating and Hot Water Industry Council to display a message on its packaging that states gas appliances must be installed by a competent, registered engineer.
This comes as a study by the Gas Safety Register revealed that just 41% of people who hire a gas engineer spend time checking they are working legally before letting them into their home.
This week is Gas Safety Week, and Stewart Clements, Director of HHIC, says that awareness of gas safety is “absolutely vital”.
He said: “Every person working in the gas industry has a responsibility to help raise awareness with consumers of the dangers and risk involved, in allowing somebody who is not trained, qualified, registered or insured, to work on any gas installation.
“A prominent message on boiler packaging will serve to remind consumers to ensure that all gas appliances must be fitted by a gas safe registered engineer.”
Customers can check an engineer’s credentials online through the Gas Safe register, or the Regis-tered Gas Installer, or in person by checking their ID card.
