Grenfell residents will get their prestigious boxing club back, plus a new community centre.

This is thanks to volunteers, donors, and the BBC’s DIY SOS team, who will be constructing two new buildings over the next few months and televising it for the DIY television programme.

The first project is rebuilding The Dale Youth Boxing Club, which was housed in Grenfell Tower and destroyed in the fire in June 2017.

It has produced many champions, including James De Gale, who won an Olympic gold medal in Bejing, and George Groves, current WBA Super Middleweight champion.

Since the fire, the club has been operating from a gym in a disused car park, but it will now be able to move to a purpose-built facility.

The club is especially important to 14-year-old Jodie, who says that boxing is helping him come to terms with the loss of his school friend in the fire.

The team will also build a new two-storey community centre on the site for survivors of the fire to use however they decide.

The Duke of Cambridge will be joining them on the show, meeting local residents and talking to firefighters who were among the first on the scene.

The BBC assures viewers that it has treated the tragedy with the utmost respect and sensitivity, and that it hopes to have left a small contribution to the community.

Donations for the project totalled £2 million, and the Builders’ Merchants Federation says it would like to thank its members who contributed.

A spokesperson said: “The builds DIY SOS undertake are possible because the construction materials, supplies, furniture (in fact everything that goes into a finished building) are given to the projects by companies who want to help.”
