OXFORD: Timbmet has become the sole supplier of South American hardwood Red Grandis (Eucalyptus grandis) to the UK and Irish markets.

The South American species, which is 100% FSC certified, is a high-grade clear timber with superior consistency in colour, appearance, grain and workability. Often used in furniture, cabinets, mouldings and within the window and door frame industry, Red Grandis can easily be finished to resemble other species such as oak and Meranti. Alternatively, if left untreated it will weather into an attractive silver grey colour.

Red Grandis has natural durability to fungi and has recently completed independent third party tests, conducted in the UK by TRADA Technology Limited, where it achieved Durability Class 2 - durable to moderately durable.

Timbmet customer, Fairoak Timber has been trialing the species in the manufacture of their windows and doors. Fairoak production manager, Chris Johnson commented: "Red Grandis is an excellent alternative to Sapele; it has similar properties but is less expensive - saving us, and ultimately our customers, money."
