Fire fighters are tackling a “serious” fire at Chandler Building Supplies' Brighton branch.

Ten appliances, plus two aerial ladders and a water bowser, are currently at the scene, and police have closed nearby roads.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was alerted at 8.44am, after the fire started in a store room at the builders’ merchant on Basin Road, North Portslade. According to the ESFRS, the building is “well alight” and creating “large volumes” of smoke.

There is no information at the moment about the cause of the fire.

ESFRS has advised nearby residents to close their windows, and for people to avoid the area. Brighton and Hove Police have closed surrounding roads and are advising motorists to take alternative routes.

“Six fire appliances responded initially from Hove, Shoreham, Roedean and Newhaven, along with a further two from Preston Circus.

“A further two appliances have now been dispatched from Lewes and Newhaven, along with two aerial ladder platforms from Preston Circus and Worthing and a water carrier,” said an ESFRS spokesman.
