Since opening in 2013, MKM’s Glasgow branch has been committed to developing its environmental strategy.

The entire branch is powered by renewable energy through the use of solar panels for electricity and a biomass boiler for heating the showroom and offices; this is in addition to heat recovery in the ventilation system.

MKM Glasgow has reduced its carbon footprint to 86.7 tonnes, with a further five tonnes saved by bailing all plastic, cardboard and paper.

A Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid joins the fleet at MKM Building Supplies’ branch in Glasgow. It is the first hybrid vehicle for MKM, and forms part of the company’s ambitions to be the a sustainable, eco-friendly builders’ merchants.

The vehicle has the world’s first fully automated dual clutch transmission for trucks, automatically selecting the right gear for the lowest fuel consumption. With an onboard hybrid system which reduces fuel consumption by up to 23%, its braking system also generates energy, making it 12.8km per litre more efficient than a full diesel model.

Lee Smith, Branch Director at MKM Glasgow, said: “With our branch already powered by renewable energy, this was the next evolutionary step. By analysing at how our products were being delivered, we took the decision to look at an Eco Hybrid vehicle. This fantastic addition is another part of our effort to be the greenest builders’ merchant in the country.”
