HIXON: The Communities and Local Government department's changes to building regulations will enhance hot water safety and efficiency measures for all new homes. The news delighted bosses at Staffordshire-based Intatec, the anti-scald bath tap, shower and valve manufacturer, which has campaigned for the introduction of anti-scald legislation for more than five years.
Bathtime scalding kills around 20 people each year in the UK and seriously injures nearly 600 more.
Intatec’s commercial director Cynthia Fisher said: “We are pleased that the Government finally recognised that the inclusion of an anti-scald valve can create a much safer environment in Britain’s bathrooms.
"The very young and the elderly are at most risk from scalding, and the proposed legislation, even though it will take a while to filter through to installations, should reinforce the message that fitting an anti-scald valve is best practice in any bathroom.
“Similar legislation was introduced in Scotland more than two years ago, but take up has been very slow. We would encourage plumbing and bathroom professionals to take up the spirit of the legislation as well as the letter of the law and begin fitting anti-scald valves as standard."
