Sika Liquid Plastics is celebrating its success in winning the Liquid Roofing Project of the Year (under 1000m2) Award at the inaugural Liquid Roofing & Waterproofing Association (LRWA) Awards & Gala.

The company’s involvement in the roof refurbishment of Lancaster University’s Chaplaincy building secured the coveted award, beating strong competition from a number of shortlisted projects.

Sika Liquid Plastics’ Pinewood Film Studio and West Suffolk Hospital projects made the final for the Liquid Roofing Project of the Year at the LRWA awards, alongside contractors Central Roofing and Allard Construction, respectfully. Sika Liquid Plastics training manager, Mark Monk was also nominated for Trainer of the Year.

Vertical Access and Permicoat, Sika Liquid Plastics’ Quality Assured Contractor, delivered the roof refurbishment at Lancaster University Chaplaincy involved the use of the Decothane Ultra system on the building’s three circular roofs and the distinctive three-pronged spire, which makes the building so recognisable as part of the University’s logo and a landmark building on entering the campus.

The virtually odourless Decothane Ultra system is applied without the need to use a flame torch allowing the Chaplaincy to remain fully operational throughout the project. The liquid waterproofing system was specified in white, steel grey and special RAL mix to match the original aesthetic of the building, with Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decotherm insulation used in areas where water ingress had degraded the legacy installation.

Phil Percer at Permicoat said: “The Lancaster University Chaplaincy project was an extremely complex roof refurbishment, involving overboarding of parapets and the spires and application of the Decothane Ultra system on vertical surfaces.

“The ease of use, versatility and virtually odourless formulation provided by Decothane Ultra helped us address those challenges and Sika Liquid Plastics’ technical support was invaluable through the programme. The completed project will protect the building from water ingress and refresh its appearance for years to come.”

James Mattison, Commercial Director of Permicoat, said: “Winning this national award is a testament to all the hard work and dedication from all staff at Permicoat Ltd and will undoubtedly contribute to further success for the company.”

Sika Liquid Plastics success was mirrored by the company’s support for the awards programme. The company was named as headline sponsor for the awards in August, supporting the awards initiative and the Gala event, which took place on 8 November at Manchester’s Hotel Football.
