David Kilburn, founder of MKM Building Supplies, has received the Business Leadership Award at the Insider Growth 100 Awards 2016, in the latest in a string of successes for the Hull-based firm.

The awards ceremony honours those businesses across Yorkshire achieving sustained, rapid growth. Mr Kilburn received the Business Leadership Award in recognition of his stewardship of MKM, since setting up the first MKM depot in Hull 21 years ago. MKM is now the UK's largest independent builders' merchant.

News of this accolade comes hot on the heels of the business being ranked #70 in The Sunday Times' Grant Thornton Top Track 250, a list recognising and ranking Britain's 'top mid-market growth companies with the biggest sales'. Thanks to a 27% boost in profits and turnover and being set to breach the £280m mark for the year to September 2016, the Hull-based builders' merchant climbed an impressive 69 places this year.

Mr Kilburn's award reflects the success of MKM's ongoing growth plan. The business now has 44 branches across England and Scotland, with more openings planned for 2017. Celebrating its 21st anniversary this year, the business has diversified its offering to both trade and the public, rolling out a series of highly-successful kitchen and bathroom showrooms.

Mr Kilburn, founder and executive chairman of MKM Buildings Supplies, said: "The Insider Growth 100 Awards are a brilliant way of recognising those firms playing a key role in promoting economic growth in the Yorkshire and Humber area. Being a Hull born-and-bred business, MKM is delighted to be supporting the future prosperity of this incredible city, its economy and communities. I commend and thank all of our staff across the country that play such a crucial role in helping us to achieve our aims for the business."
