MKM Building Supplies cooked up a storm in February, exceeding £1m in kitchen sales in a single month for the first time.

The record-breaking month comes as the company continues its ambitious expansion into the home interiors market, creating luxurious and stylish kitchen and bathroom showrooms across its 42-branch network.

In February, MKM launched its 34th showroom in Grimsby, investing £50,000 in the facility. The launch was followed last month by a £30,000 upgrade of its Sheffield North showroom, bringing the South Yorkshire branch into line with the company’s corporate vision.

Linda Clarke, special projects director at MKM Building Supplies, said the move was paying dividends with sales of kitchens growing 50% in the 12 months to September 2015, compared to the same period in the previous year.

MKM Building Supplies has invested nearly £500,000 rolling out new showrooms and refitting existing ones, with more due to come on stream in the coming months. All new branches will now have a state-of-the-art kitchen and bathroom showroom, with at least one kitchen specialist/designer on tap to provide its customers with top designs.

Ms Clarke said: “To exceed £1m of kitchens sales in a single month is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the fact our strategy is right and it is being delivered by some very talented and dedicated people.

“We have made a significant investment in our kitchen offering, across our branch network, which has led to a big hike in sales.”

Ms Clarke added that the success of the strategy was due to the quality of the products from key suppliers and the team of expert design consultants, which MKM employs.

“Our kitchen specialists provide a huge amount of value to both our trade and retail customers,” she said. “We don’t just sell kitchens, we provide knowledge, advice and products that help the buyers of our kitchens realise their vision, whether that is a builder creating a property to sell or a retail customer wanting to create their dream home. Whatever your desire, we have the information and the products to create it.”

David Kilburn, executive chairman of MKM Building Supplies, added that the company was implementing a similar process across a number of product areas including roofing, landscaping, plumbing and heating.

He said: “This type of product knowledge specialisation enables us to give maximum value to customers. We have always been known for the quality of the products and services we provide, this had played a huge role in our success. The business and the industry as a whole has to move forward and the way MKM see it developing is through the provision of personalised, expert advice and guidance in key product areas such as that which we provide through our kitchen showrooms.

“In this respect we are leading the market. No other builders’ merchant provides this kind of expertise, and as the company continues to develop you will see it become a much bigger part of the MKM experience and a key factor in its growth strategy.”
