“Timber is our business” is the ethos of M H Southern & Co Ltd founded in 1913 being a fourth generation family company specialising in timber importing and sawmilling and providing a high quality, flexible service to all construction and allied industries. With locations in the north east of England at Jarrow, Gateshead and Berwick upon Tweed, MHS is located within easy access of key roads and regional port facilities, allowing the company to serve the whole of the UK as well as undertaking export orders.
Extensive facilities at both sites enables MHS to produce, stock and supply a wide range of machined timbers, including large sections and extra long lengths, and with the ability to handle unusual requirements at a very competitive price.
They stock certified timbers and have an extensive range of speciality species from across the world including: Douglas Fir, Pitch Pine, Greenheart, Ekki/Azobe, Yellow Pine, Keruing, Opepe, Cedar and Larch. This policy allows for serving a diverse spread of customers including DIY outlets, joiners, builders and timber merchants, railway companies and even the Ministry of Defence. Ample undercover storage and carefully defined facilities to provide preservative treated timber add to a comprehensive and professional service which also reflects the thriving overall state of the industry. A core aspect of this developing success has been the relationship with Bulmor Lancer, and the absolutely ideal design of their sideloader range which has now extended to a set of new high performance and robust forklift trucks fitted with the latest Perkins clean output 3B engines fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) to benefit the ozone layer and the environment. Bulmor Lancer is the market leader in the timber industry and this is reflected in the specification and innovative features including the engine below the platform giving a lower centre of gravity and increased lift capacity: a luxury cabin with all-round visibility for maximum operator output: 1350mm well width offering a compact short chassis and single speed hydrostatic Rexroth system.
James Southern is one of the current family at the helm and he takes pride in the place of the company. “We are a significant employer in our world and much of this success has been built on maintaining standards across the board in terms of the quality of our staff and equipment which reflects in the best customer support. When I was carefully searching for the new trucks I was impressed by their team and the excellent value for money of the product. The format meets our special needs such as the same footprint as our previous fleet and high maneuverability for tight lanes. Formerly we relied on cranes and sheer physical strength to move the timber which is now totally the remit of the sideloader fleet and this has given us the comfort for any kind of job such as 60 feet lengths for a Thames causeway. The future is looking very positive”.
