Bangers and cash: Parkers raises money for charity

Published:  16 October, 2015

An assistant branch manager at Parker Building Supplies has found an innovative way to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Last month Aaron Palmer, the Hassocks branch assistant manager of Parker Building Supplies, and his long-suffering wife Stephanie, embarked on a seven-day road trip to Prague in a 10-year-old insurance write-off covered in graffiti as part of the Motoscape Rally. Hardly a romantic getaway, but a big-hearted endeavour none the less!

The Motoscape Rally challenges competitors to take a car, worth no more than £333, to the extremes of its own endurance, not knowing if it would even make the ferry in one piece, and to collect sponsorship in aid of the charity of their own choosing. Having already raised thousands for Parkers’ Partner Charity Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT), that choice came easily for the Palmers.

Even before they set off, the couple used the ruling that each of the competing bangers should be pimped (customised) with as little subtlety as their imaginations would allow, to their advantage, and the idea of the 'Signature Car' was born.

Friends, family and Parker customers were invited to sign their names and leave messages on the 2005 Diesel Ford Mondeo in exchange for a cash donation. The car's vinyl wrap and numerous random scribblings (along with new doors, intercooler pipe, wheel bearings, and a brand new MOT through the gritted teeth of the garage) gave the former Category C insurance write-off a new lease of life.

Mr and Mrs Palmer made it to Prague with (almost) no incident and raised in excess of £2,000 for TCT in the process.

"A few years ago," Mr Palmer explained, "my younger brother was diagnosed with cancer. His treatment was a success but I had been thinking of a way to raise money for other young cancer patients. Parkers’ support for Teenage Cancer Trust gave me the perfect opportunity."
