Monk Fryston and Hillam Community Association has given its village community centre a new lease of life, thanks to a donation from British Gypsum.
The project was also supported by Selby District Council’s Western Area Community Engagement Forum. The centre, which is located at the heart of the village, provides youth clubs, Scout and Guide groups and community interest groups for Selby villagers.
Originally founded in 1968 by a group of village volunteers, the association was set up to create and provide a communal space and playground for the benefit of locals from the co-joined villages. The building of the hall was funded entirely by villagers, who also ensure the premises are maintained.
British Gypsum donated much-needed products for work on the walls and ceilings of two new extensions to the community building, and the new ceiling of the re-roofed and enlarged main hall.
Simon Tait, plant manager at British Gypsum, said: “We jumped at the chance to provide the charity with materials to help renovate their community centre. The products donated will ensure local groups will be able to make the most of the centre for many years to come.”
Ray Newton, chairman of Monk Fryston and Hillam Community Centre, said: “We’re very grateful for the support from the team at British Gypsum. The centre is highly important to the community, with local youth and community groups using it on a regular basis. The development and expansion of the centre is vital as there are no other suitable premises available nearby to accommodate the growing community in the Sherburn area.”
