CPET: opening doors to responsible timber procurement.

CPET sets out timber strategies for local authorities

Published:  14 October, 2009

OXFORD: The Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET), the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) and WWF are working together to provide practical advice to local authorities on responsible timber procurement.

This initiative, which is supported by Defra and by local partnerships, is a first step, said CPET.

It has sent letters to councillors in England and Wales to convince them of the need to adopt responsible timber procurement policies in order to combat illegal logging, promote the use of wood as a renewable resource, and to mitigate climate change.

CPET also informed them about the free-of-charge-support that is available to local authorities in the UK.

A toolkit has also been developed to provide background information, step-by-step guidance for developing and implementing a responsible timber procurement policy as well as off-the-shelf documents and case studies.
