Billion pound Basildon plan

Published:  17 December, 2012

The council has backed plans for a 1bn redevelopment scheme in the town centre. Developer Barratt Wilson Bowden's plans for one of the biggest regeneration projects in the country were described by the council planning meeting as "really ambitious, but realistic and commercially viable".

The masterplan has projects set to be completed over the next five years that includes a cinema, restaurants and bars, as well as a new market, a college and 2000 new houses. There is also scope for an extension to the Towngate Theatre.

Over the a longer 20-year time frame Barratt hopes to build 3650 houses, more than half a million square feet of retail and leisure space along with a similar amount of commercial property.

David Eardley, divisional managing director at Barratt Wilson Bowden, said: "It's great to see the masterplan progressing. The regeneration has already begun with the Acacia Park development which will help to fund the next phases of town centre and park improvements, and an application for a new town centre college has been submitted."
