SOUTHAMPTON: BSS Industrial has welcomed over one hundred guests including suppliers and customers to its annual ‘BSS Challenge Cup’ sailing event. The three day event took place between the 14 and 16 June and saw 15 teams from around the UK race around the Solent on identical ‘Oceanis 37’ yachts.
The first day allowed time for the competing sailors to get to grips with their vessels and despite some aggressive waves they managed to practice on the water before relaxing and networking in the evening. Race day was a tense affair thanks to a worrying prediction of a storm and strong winds, but despite the weather report, the sun managed to break through the clouds with the sailing getting underway.
After some of the most competitive racing the BSS Challenge Cup has ever seen, the winning boat sponsored by Wilo was the first to cross the finish line. Manned by Steve Walmsley, Richard Harden, Andy Moss, Stuart Bridgewater, Nick Munit and Danny Bielby the team achieved a a score of 4 points followed by the Grundfos boat with a score of 25 points.
Frank Elkins, managing director for BSS Industrial, a crew member on the Flamco boat, said: “The BSS Challenge Cup grows in popularity each year and the competitive spirit of 2012 certainly made it the most exciting and tense race yet. Spending quality time with customers and suppliers is always a pleasure - it’s the ideal opportunity to build new relationships and catch up with old friends.”
The event was drawn to a close with a three course dinner and awards giving ceremony where the winning teams were congratulated on their achievements. Sponsors of the 2012 BSS Challenge Cup were: Wilo, Baxi, Marla, Durapipe, Geberit, Polypipe, Grundfos, ISG, Mueller, Conex, Pegler Yorkshire, George Fischer, Flamco, Crane Hattersley and Victaulic.
