Harris and Bailey celebrate 100 years trading

CROYDON: Big breakfasts and weekend closing work for builders' merchants Harris and Bailey celebrating its centenary.

Brian Richardson, chairman, instigated the breakfast service and Saturday closing. "A few years ago I popped into a cafe in Selsdon and found it full of our customers.

"They were all eating breakfast because they said they wouldn't get lunch as they would be working or out getting supplies."

Mr Richardson built a restaurant on the Hastings Road site serving the trade customers. "We open at 8am and people can come in and have breakfast while we are putting their orders together. It has proved to be very popular," he says,

Mr Richardson persuaded staff to cut their lunch hour in half in return for Saturdays off, making Harris and Bailey one the few merchants in the area to close all weekend. But it is working says Mr Richardson. "We are doing well, turnover is about £14m and this is down to offering a better service all round."
