Elson invests and revamps to meet market demands

NORWICH: Elson, a leading provider of domestic hot water solutions, has made a £1 million investment in new production plant and has revamped and improved its product range.

Part of the BDR Thermea group, Elson is a long-established water heating manufacturer. Its flagship products include pre-plumbed and prefabricated packaged solutions, which are quicker to install and save time and money on site, and thermal stores, which provide mains pressure hot water from a vented system – providing an alternative when an unvented system isn’t viable or appropriate.

The company has recently invested just over a million pounds in a new semi-automated production line at its new Norwich based factory, to better meet the needs of its customers. New automated pressure testing equipment has also been installed, which tests products to 1.5 times their operating pressure – giving customers increased confidence in the Elson brand.

A significant investment has also been made in research and development to improve the performance of Elson products and ensure they meet the requirements of impending new legislation and the company’s customer base, which mainly comprises house builders and developers.

Ian Lock, general manager of Elson, said: “There have been some big changes at Elson, and we’re making some very positive steps forward. We’ve completely refreshed our existing product range, and have added some unique features. The Coral Aquanox thermal store, for example, has a fully integrated header tank and comes fully piped up, making installation very simple and straightforward. We have also significantly improved insulation, even insulating the TMV valve, as this is a known high source of heat loss. This has a marked impact on the SAP* performance, which is a key factor in the new build market.

“Alongside the enhancement of existing products we are also entering an exciting phase of new product development. Our R&D programme is focused on broadening our portfolio into areas where we know we have core competence – with the aim of providing an even wider range of hot water solutions for our customers.”

All of Elson’s hot water cylinders are now manufactured from Duplex stainless steel rather than copper. This material has outstanding and unique corrosion resistant properties, and, being lightweight yet very strong, has a strength-to-weight ratio advantage. With Duplex stainless steel maintenance requirements and costs are also significantly reduced compared to mild steel, copper and low-grade stainless steel.

Elson has also designed and developed a unique domestic hot water coil for its thermal store products to improve heat transfer and ensure that all available energy is used.
