Cutting carbon - the Wolseley way

LEAMINGTON SPA: Wolseley Center has cut its carbon emissions by 73% after installing a Building Management Energy System (BMES) and implementing a range of carbon-saving initiatives. 

Wolseley's UK employees and the facilities and environment teams have reduced carbon emissions from 839 tonnes a year in 2009 to 223 tonnes in 2012.

The carbon saved is enough to fill 124 hot air balloons, supporting the company's target to reduce energy consumption by 10% by August 2012.

To achieve the reduction, several carbon reduction projects were undertaken, including:

* Upgrading the building's heating system to take advantage of natural heating and cooling.

* Installing a Building Management System (BMS).

* Purchasing energy-efficient equipment.

* Maintaining a regular dialogue with colleagues on how to use energy wisely.

* Introducing lower wattage bulbs to the building.

Connor Dalton, the national merchant's environmental manager, said: "This achievement is a result of Wolseley UK's ongoing dedication and commitment to carbon emissions reduction. We will continue to strive to decrease this figure further.

"Environmental responsibility lies with all of us and even making small changes can make a big difference. For instance, by introducing more efficient lighting to the first floor of the Wolseley Center, we can reduce the electricity consumed by 3276 kilowatts a year, the equivalent of running a small fan heater continually for 138 days.

"I'd like to say a big 'thank you' to all Wolseley UK colleagues for their continued efforts to help us achieve our company target of reducing energy consumption by 10%."
