Cultural change for Jewson

COVENTRY: Jewson has been awarded ISO14001 status across all 500 nationwide branches following a three year intensive assessment programme.
IS0 14001, the environmental management standard that recognises how organisations have reduced their impact on the environment, has been awarded to Jewson as a result of its commitment to implementing an effective Environmental Management System across its whole organisational structure.
Measureable criteria included gas and electric energy use, diesel use in lorries, the negative environmental impact of products bought from suppliers and waste production – all of which have been significantly reduced since the programme was initially implemented in 2006.
Steve Millward, Jewson's sustainability and quality director, says: "ISO14001 has made us all think differently about the way we carry out our everyday tasks and it has modernised the organisation in a way that nothing else could. Everyone within the company, from those in the yard to those in charge of logistics, has been positively affected by this programme. Changing company culture is notoriously difficult however we have not only changed it, but transformed it on a national scale. Jewson now do things better and more efficiently than ever before, which when you consider we employ 8500 people, is a huge feat. Moreover, everyone throughout the business now knows about ISO14001 and, most importantly, how their individual roles contribute to achieving and maintaining this coveted status."
Ellen Gregory, Audit Resources Manager for BM TRADA, praised the enthusiasm and achievement of Jewson and their Branch Managers and comments: "Jewson's environmental management system was independently certified by BM TRADA Certification, a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited certification body. Following its successful nationwide certification, Jewson will continue to be audited by BM TRADA to ensure that they meet the requirements of this International Standard which requires continual improvement."
Mr Millward adds: "National certification is undoubtedly a hugely positive move forward for the business, particularly with the tightening up of trading regulations and the growing importance placed on minimising our carbon footprint. Not only does it highlight that, as a business, we have made significant steps to reduce our environmental impact; it also demonstrates our adaptability and our ability to engender cultural change on a considerable scale."
