Retail boosts merchant performance

Stronger retail sales are supporting merchant performance and helping offset falls in trade business.

Travis Perkins reports a trend among cash-strapped consumers opting to do their own work, meaning less business for its builder customers.

Travis reported better than expected sales through its Wickes stores yesterday when it released its interim results.

The company said "It is perhaps not surprising that home improvement activity has been stronger than anticipated and that many builders complain about being undercut by their own clients."

Sales at Wickes, the Travis retail arm, are helped by intensive advertising and promotional activity running this summer.
