LONDON/WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE: Lucia Di Stazio, director of specialist agency MRA marketing, has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London at a ceremony at the Guildhall.
Ms Di Stazio, joins an illustrious list of people to have been bestowed with this award, including actors David Suchet and Dame Judy Dench, His Grace the Duke of Hamilton and the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster.
Until 1835, the Freedom of the City was essential to anyone who wished to exercise a trade in the City of London. A number of ancient privileges are associated with the Freedom. They include the right to herd sheep over London Bridge, to be married in St Paul's Cathedral, and to be drunk and disorderly without fear of arrest.
These days, the Freedom of the City has no real privileges, but is open to all who are interested and who meet the criteria set down by the City of London Corporation.
It provides local government services for the Square Mile – the financial and commercial heart of Britain – and works nationally and internationally to maintain and enhance the City as a world-leading international financial and business centre.
