Liverpool builder Ensign goes under

Published:  06 October, 2011

LIVERPOOL: Building firm Ensign Contractors has been placed into administration.

The firm was established by managing director Freddy Peacock just over a decade ago and specialises in build projects around Merseyside from schools to office developments.

It also won a string of jobs for the University of Liverpool.

Gary Corbett and Darren Brookes of Cheshire-based Milner Boardman & Partners, are handling the administration.

The news comes as accountant Deloitte released findings of a rise in construction and property companies falling into administration. This increased by 11% to 117 in the third quarter compared with 105 in the same period last year.

Deloitte partner Nigel Shilton said: "The property and construction sectors have been two sectors hardest hit by the current economic uncertainty.

"Rising energy prices and significant cuts to public and private sector building projects have brought a large amount of planned projects to a grinding halt.

He predicted that the next quarter was going to continue to be tough for the construction sector and would particularly hit small and medium-sized firms.
