GATESHEAD: Galliford Try has been appointed preferred bidder on the £347m Gateshead regeneration programme, one of the UK's largest residential schemes of this type.

The builder, in a joint venture with social landlord Home Group, will form a regeneration partnership with Gateshead Council to build a mix of 2400 affordable and private sale homes across 19 sites in the city.

All dwellings will achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and will exceed Homes & Communities Agency space standards.

The Evolution Gateshead consortium is due to start work later this year with the development programme phased to complete by 2026.
