Tool theft hits West Country merchants

Published:  09 July, 2009

EXETER: Police are warning merchants to be extra vigilant following a spate of thefts from building sites and tool shops/hire shops where premises have been broken into and thousands of pounds worth of power tools have been stolen.

Devon and Cornwall Constabulary said the most recent burglary took place at Tool Care Hire on Hennock Road Central over the weekend where five petrol Stihl disc cutters were taken along with a PC laptop, PC desktop and monitor and cash.

A police spokesman said: "This has come at the worst time, where builders lose days of work, as without tools they can not do their job.

"These thefts appear to be fairly organised, with many items being specifically selected.

"Builders and builders' merchants need to be aware and secure their premises and report anything suspicious."

Anybody with any information should call DC Moira Hamilton Exeter CID 08452 777444 quoting crime ref DE/09/7507.
