Wienerberger rolls out responsible sourcing standard

Published:  09 March, 2011

CHEADLE: Architects and specifiers have seen their choice of sustainably manufactured bricks and pavers increase after products from three more Wienerberger factories were awarded BES 6001 responsible sourcing certification.

Brick and paver products from the Denton, Kingsbury and Waresley factories have all recently been awarded BES 6001 responsible sourcing certificates.

Products now accredited include the Henfield Multi from Warnham; the 100% recycled Denton Smooth Cream; the Harvest Buff from Waresley; as well as the full range of Baggeridge Blue bricks from Kingsbury and the SUDS system Aquata pavers, believed to be the first clay paver in the industry to achieve this accreditation.

Wienerberger, the world's biggest brick manufacturer, became the first in the UK to achieve BES 6001 certification when products from its Warnham factory were accredited in August 2009.

The benchmark is being rolled out to all of its UK manufacturing facilities, as part of Wienerberger's commitment to achieving certification for all clay products with inherent sustainability credentials.

Keith Barker, Wienerberger's commercial director, said achieving the standard was not only good practice for any responsible manufacturer, but had also proved to be a popular move with customers. "We understand the demands on our customers to achieve certain ratings and strive to support them through the development of new products with increased recycled content or higher thermal insulation values for example.

"Accreditation to BES 6001 enables us to offer customers a blanket reassurance that products have been assessed and accepted by the UK's leading, independent sustainability authority. By removing the barriers, we provide specifiers with both peace of mind and the freedom to choose products on the basis of their relevance and aesthetic value to their individual projects.”
