MKM collects over £8K for Bobby Moore Fund

Published:  08 November, 2010

HULL: MKM, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of building materials, is celebrating the success of its recent fundraising efforts for Cancer Research UK.

Over the past few months, MKM’s 36 branches raised a collective total of £8062 by selling World Cup flags for a £2 donation and holding in-store fundraising events. The money will be given to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, which raises money for research into bowel cancer.

MKM’s Darlington branch raised the most funds out of all the MKM branches nationwide, by collecting a total of £1000.

The Darlington team is always willing to take part, as Tony Walton, MKM Darlington’s branch director, explained: “The team is really pleased that they managed to raise the most funds out of the whole company. We held lots of events over the World Cup period such as raffles and lucky dips which involved our staff, customers and suppliers. Some of our suppliers made generous donations so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their help.

“Our customers really enjoy participating, so we regularly hold fund raising events when major football tournaments take place. In the past we have raised a similar amount for a local hospice here in Darlington and it’s very rewarding to know you are making a difference.”

Lindsay Kay, Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager, said: “We are extremely grateful to everyone at MKM for their fantastic fundraising effort. By using the excitement around the 2010 World Cup to remember one of football’s heroes, Bobby Moore – who sadly died of bowel cancer – they successfully encouraged both staff and customers to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund.

“Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK after breast and lung cancer, with almost 100 people diagnosed with the disease every day. When it is found early, more than nine out of 10 people will survive the disease for more than five years.

"The money raised for the Bobby Moore Fund is spent on high-quality bowel cancer research carried out by leading scientists working across the UK. It also helps raise public awareness of the disease, its symptoms and prevention.”

MKM’s chief executive, David Kilburn comments: “We want to extend our thanks to all of the MKM employees and customers who helped to make our latest fundraising initiative a great success. We are delighted to have raised such a significant amount for the Bobby Moore Fund – the response from our customers was fantastic!”
