Thompson Building Centres
Founded in 1955, Thompsons is a family-owned independent builders' merchant. It has nine branches including TAPS and Fossway Builders' Merchants and is one of the largest merchant operations in the North East. The Thompson Building Centre group of companies are headed by managing director, Anne Ganley.
Thompsons has a history of commitment to its area and to its local community. Its activities have always ensured that part of its business included working with the disadvantaged, providing the community with educational services, sports opportunities while also driving a culture of environmental excellence throughout the Thompson Group.
The merchant's staff, its customers and local schools have all benefited from this work, which was spearheaded by Anne Ganley.
Working in a competitive market that is surrounded by some of the industry'y big players, Anne Ganley has taken her company from strength to strength. The impressive growth in the business is due to Anne's drive, initiative and vision, as well as to her ability to tactically overcome obstacles, although she would be the first to admit that she is backed by a hard-working and dedicated team.
Mrs Ganley has always acknowledged the importance of her workers and was instrumental in setting up an employee share scheme to help staff share in the company's good fortune.
She works nationally within the industry through Cemco, the BMF and NMBS, among others.
Locally, she maintains a high profile as an ambassador for women through Business Link. She is a founder member of the Entrepreneur Forum, responsible for mentoring new businesses and of the Thompson Community Chest Fund.
With her detailed understanding of the market, Mrs Ganley's company has grown year-on-year. This growth has been attributed to her versatility, imagination and persistence in exploiting the market and in the performance of the group, which has gone from a turnover of £19m last year to £30m this year.
LBS Builders' Merchants
Mark Davies, managing director of LBS Builders' Merchants, has shown vision and drive over the last 12 months to continually grow and improve his business, with excellence in customer service always being at the forefront of his mind. Key initiatives include:
A strategy for continual growth. 2006 has seen two branch openings - Pembroke Dock in West Wales in March and the acquisition of an independent merchant in Swansea in August. Both form part of an overall network of 10 branches in South West Wales, with around 190 employees.
Significant investment in a major refurbishment and expansion programme in a number of the yards was made in order to accommodate growing customer demand.
Continued investment in expertise within the business with the growth of his management team. The company has invested further in a bespoke training manager and increased resource in sales and marketing with the business responsibility being split between heavyside and lightside, with respective managers on each side.
Design and development of the company's website, built as part of a two-stage strategy with the foundations in place to sell online (www.lbsbm.co.uk).
The relaunch of Kitchens & Bathrooms under the separate proposition and brand of ‘Middleton', featured newly-designed modern showrooms, premium, quality products and dedicated Middleton staff.
Mr Davies has also been a significant driving force in the development of NBG, having been its founder chairman.
