Thompson Building Centres

Founded in 1955, Thompsons is a family-owned independent builders' merchant. It has nine branches including TAPS and Fossway Builders' Merchants and is one of the largest merchant operations in the North East. The Thompson Building Centre group of companies are headed by managing director, Anne Ganley.

Thompsons has a history of commitment to its area and to its local community. Its activities have always ensured that part of its business included working with the disadvantaged, providing the community with educational services, sports opportunities while also driving a culture of environmental excellence throughout the Thompson Group.

The merchant's staff, its customers and local schools have all benefited from this work, which was spearheaded by Anne Ganley.

Working in a competitive market that is surrounded by some of the industry'y big players, Anne Ganley has taken her company from strength to strength. The impressive growth in the business is due to Anne's drive, initiative and vision, as well as to her ability to tactically overcome obstacles, although she would be the first to admit that she is backed by a hard-working and dedicated team.

Mrs Ganley has always acknowledged the importance of her workers and was instrumental in setting up an employee share scheme to help staff share in the company's good fortune.

She works nationally within the industry through Cemco, the BMF and NMBS, among others.

Locally, she maintains a high profile as an ambassador for women through Business Link. She is a founder member of the Entrepreneur Forum, responsible for mentoring new businesses and of the Thompson Community Chest Fund.

With her detailed understanding of the market, Mrs Ganley's company has grown year-on-year. This growth has been attributed to her versatility, imagination and persistence in exploiting the market and in the performance of the group, which has gone from a turnover of £19m last year to £30m this year.
