Covers Timber & Builders' Merchants, won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Chichester Observer Business Awards.

Mr Hellyer, who retired last year, after spending 66 years at Covers, said: "This is a very emotional moment for me."

While on stage with host Fred Dinenage, he gave the audience an insight into his time with Covers. He said that between 1946 and 1956 he employed Pompey players to help shift timber which had arrived at Portsmouth. The audience also learned there are 80 000 known species of wood in the world.

Established in the Sussex area for more than 160 years, Covers has 13 depots in Hampshire, Sussex, and Surrey.
