Powerstar – helping Palram Polycarb cut its energy bills

Published:  08 March, 2010

DONCASTER: Palram Polycarb, manufacturer of thermoplastic sheets, has achieved energy savings in excess of 180 000kWh at its Doncaster production facility in the first six months following the installation of the Powerstar voltage optimisation system.

Latest figures show that a Powerstar 1500kva unit installed at the beginning of May 2009 has enabled the company to reduce its energy consumption by over 6%.

Powerstar is said to be the only voltage optimisation system designed and manufactured in the UK and is the highest rated with an efficiency of 99.91%. At its heart the system lowers current and voltage harmonic distortions to reduce energy consumption and operating temperatures.

Matthew Healey, Technical Manager at PALRAM Polycarb says: “With continual monitoring we expect to see savings in excess of the 6% guarantee – a great level of return on investment. And are well on track to achieve payback in 20 months which is quite phenomenal.

"Importantly, by reducing energy consumption, Powerstar is also helping PALRAM’s commitment to help conserve the environment.”

Powerstar managing director Dr Alex Mardapittas comments: “On the face of it lowering the voltage sounds straightforward but it’s actually much more complex and demands an engineering solution to what is an engineering problem. That’s why we carry out an onsite survey first and build a bespoke Powerstar unit for each client.

“For us power optimisation is not about selling boxes; it’s about helping companies like Palram Polycarb achieve demonstrable savings in their energy bills, lower maintenance costs on equipment and, through the real time monitoring system, enabling them to take further steps on their own to reduce overall electricity consumption.”
