Travis helps community get green award

LONDON: A group that transformed an area of wasteland with help from Travis Perkins is a finalist in this year's Guardian Awards.

The Stanstead Gard transformed the Stanstead Strip near their homes in Forest Hill.

Travis Perkins, which own the land, contributes an annual sum of money to help the group maintain the 80ft by 12ft the site.

Travis donated tools and continues to offer materials at cost price to the group of 50 residents who hold community planting days and have set up a volunteer rota for care and maintenance of the site.

Green Guardian initiative, a four-year-old environmental awareness campaign, is a partnership between Newsquest South London, South London borough councils and commercial businesses and organisations.
