Thieves target copper and lead

Published:  01 December, 2009

SOMERSET: Thieves are targeting building material storage depots in Bridgwater to steal copper and lead.

Over 35 thefts have been reported to the police to this year. A police spokeswoman said: "A lot of these thefts are from building sites and building developments. In some cases, the offenders have targeted tool and material storage containers and in others, they've broken into site offices to take keys for storage containers and newly-built houses in order to get at the materials."

The police are increasing patrols in hotspots, such as the former Federal Mogul building in Bridgwater, but they advise builders and merchants to get extra security for vulnerable sites.
