CARDIFF: The proposed adoption of Site Waste Management Plans and landfill bans in Wales would be "disastrous" for the construction trade.

Richard Jenkins director, Federation of Master Builders, giving evidence at a Welsh Assembly committee session for the "Proposed Waste (Wales) measure" bill, described the plans as "a little bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut."

"There are some very good things going on in Wales. Construction Excellence has got a trial on recycling transfer depots at builders' merchants, which makes a lot of sense, but a landfill ban at this time would be disastrous," Mr Jenkins said.

The evidence sessions conclude on 5 May.
